Silas flies high for Orchid Cancer

As a very young publishing art director, I created my first children’s book. ‘Silas, the first pig to fly’, became a bit of a classic, selling across the world. Forty years later, I’m publishing a new edition with all-new illustrations, and plan to donate half of the profits to the Orchid Men’s Cancer charity.

When I moved to Billericay in 2004, I saw the Orchid Cycle Ride advertised. It was on the anniversary of the date my father died of prostate cancer – so it was a no-brainer, I participated, of course. I don’t think I have missed a ride since.

Earlier this year, I was diagnosed too, but thanks to awareness through Orchid, mine was caught early with a prognosis of complete recovery.

A reissue of ‘Silas’ had been at the back of my mind for some time and it seemed like a great opportunity to put the book to good use.

Keeping it in the family, my daughter, keen runner Catriona Richards participated for Orchid in the Royal Parks half-marathon on Sunday 12 October, 2014, completing a total of three half marathons for the fund.
